Anything with moveable parts and belts that picks up dust and dirt requires tune-ups and a maintenance program. The biggest mistake customers make is not maintaining their unit. We recommend having your vacuum/system tuned up every 2-3 years and that you change your filters every 6 months.
Also, all flat/smooth surface belts need to be replaced once a year minimum. A $3 belt can save you hundreds on a new motor and gives you a better living environment as your vacuum will be working at it's potential and cleaning your carpets and floors as intended. Proper maintenance will also save you time as you will only need to go over an area once if the vacuum is performing properly.
